Kindergarten & First Grade

Pre-readers

Art for Kids   Alice Ong

Lab fee: $5

Using various craft and art projects students will develop their motor skills and creativity. A fun time of learning!

Elementary Choir (ages 5–12)  Teri Ong

Lab fee: $10/family

We will be learning the musical Of Mice and Mozart during the spring semester. There will be drama parts that students grades 3-7 can audition for. Those with speaking parts will need to attend some additional Saturday rehearsals. The music fee includes a practice CD along with the performer’s score. Students must participate in the dress rehearsal on Tuesday, March 31 from 9:00-12:00 and the concert on Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m. in order to receive a grade for the course.

Character for Kids pt I  Bethany Schmidt

Lab fee: $10

This 2-part class is a fun-filled time for students while they learn about the importance of good character. Each week we will learn about a different character quality as demonstrated in God’s creation. The first hour there will be a story and craft relating to the quality for that week. In the second hour there will be activities, songs, and games to help apply good character to our lives. Come and join us this fall for an enjoyable time of character lessons & learning! (We will be covering new character qualities this semester.)

Animal Kingdom  James Clifford

Lab: $5

Using the text The Animal Kingdom by Debbie and Richard Lawrence, we will learn about the animal kingdom. We will learn about giraffes, elephants, bears and bats, marsupials and mammals that live in the water, and other vertebrates such as birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, salamanders and fish. This course will introduce students to the ideas of classification and shows that there is not only beauty but also order in God’s animal kingdom. Each student will be compiling a notebook full of activities that will help with review of what we have learned.

Beginning Readers

Literature: Little House in the Big Woods     MaryBeth Clifford

Lab/Text: $10 (Includes a copy of Little House in the Big Woods)

Come and find out what life was like living on the prairie in the 1800's as we read about the Ingalls family in Little House in the Big Woods. We will have read-aloud sessions in class, various worksheet activities, old-fashioned one room school spelling bees, and we’ll taste test some of the recipes the Ingalls family ate.

Each week we will have a story about one of these Great Christians to discover why we call them “great” as well as learn how their lives impact ours today. Our class time will also include memory work, hands-on activities and crafts. Come have fun learning about Great Christians! We will be studying new people this semester!

Lab fee: $5

Come and learn to draw in the style of several different famous illustrators of children’s books. While we draw our pictures we will listen to some of the different stories these artists illustrated.

Colorado History       Teri Ong

Lab/Text fee: $15/student

We will be learning about the history of Colorado from the time of Creation to the present. Activities will include time lines, maps, story telling, word games, and many hands-on craft projects. The lab fee (per student) includes a notebook with all unit study materials for class and home use, plus all of the craft supplies.

History of WWII Pt 2    James Clifford

This class will be an overview of the historical events of the European and Pacific theatre of WWII. In addition to discussing the historical events during WWII, we will also look at  the effects of WWII on our lives today. This class is open to new students.

Beautiful Girlhood      Annie Sechrist

Lab/Text: $12 (Includes the book Beautiful Girlhood)

Class will study the lives of virtuous women of God in history and in the Bible, as well as practice implementing Biblical character qualities in the home through a variety of projects and Bible studies.

Instrumental Ensemble (Gr. 5-12)   Teri Ong

We will be working on music by Mozart to perform in conjunction with the Elementary Choir’s production Of Mice and Mozart. Participation in the concert on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. is required in order to receive a grade for the course.

Communication Workshop    Annie Sechrist

Lab fee: $5

This class is designed to train effective communicators for Christ by giving students a foundation in writing and minor public speaking. Projects will teach students how to put ideas into well-crafted writing (such as a persuasive article, story, or poetry) as well as how to express those ideas through the spoken word (persuasive speech, storytelling, reciting poetry, dramatic reading).

Music History   Joelle Schmidt

Lab fee: $5

How did Bach sign all of his music? Who wrote the “Hallelujah Chorus”? At what age did Mozart start to write music? Come find answers to all of these questions about music history. We will learn about ancient, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary music. We will also learn about the styles and sounds that make these musical periods unique. Our class time will include listening to many musical selections as well as learning about the exciting lives of such famous composers as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Handel.

General Science pt 2 of 2 (Grades 5-8)     Linda Kautz

A continuation of the fall semester. Students must have attended the fall semester in order to participate in the spring semester.

Great Christians (Gr. 4-7)  Joelle Schmidt

Lab fee: $5

In this class we will learn about the lives of ten great men and women of the faith. Each week we will have a story about one of these Great Christians to discover why we call them “great” as well as learn how their lives impact ours today.  Our class time will also include writing out character evaluations, review tests, memory work, and writing a final paper on one great Christian. Come be inspired by the lives of these amazing men and women of the faith! We will be studying new people this semester.

Introduction to Latin pt 2 (Grades 5-8)   MaryBeth Clifford

Lab fee: $5

A continuation of the fall semester. New students must have consent of the instructor and pass an entrance exam with an 80%. We will be continuing to build a basic vocabulary while studying nouns of the third declension and adjectives of the first, second and third declension.

Art: Landscapes & Animals    Christopher Ong

Lab fee: $5

We will study landscapes and animals in this class. This class will teach  students about perspective, adding depth to pictures, and shading techniques. Pictures will be drawn and shaded in black and white. All art supplies will be provided.

A continuation of the fall semester. Students must have attended the fall semester in order to participate in the spring semester.

Debate      Sarah Ong

Lab fee: $10

Students participating in spring semester must already have a working knowledge of policy debate or have participated in the fall semester debate course. This class will help students strengthen their debate skills by giving additional hands-on experience in debate. We will be focusing on how to gain speaker points by utilizing persuasiveness and organization in your presentation. Students will learn how to take their skills to the next level to help insure a ballot in their favor.

Instrumental Ensemble (Gr. 5-12)    Teri Ong

We will be working on music by Mozart to perform in conjunction with the Elementary Choir’s production Of Mice and Mozart. Participation in the concert on Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. is required in order to receive a grade for the course.

Grammar & Composition       Annie Sechrist

Lab/Text fee: $15 (Includes text On Writing Well)

NOTE: This class is being offered twice on the schedule: 9:15a.m. and 1:00p.m. Please make sure you indicate which class period you are registering for on your class registration.

Introduces writers to the tricky areas of word usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation, while teaching them how to put together well-ordered and vivid sentences, paragraphs, and short essays. Goal for this class is to make each student an effective user of words as well as to create an enthusiasm for great writing.

Human Anatomy pt 2 of 2         Linda Kautz

A continuation of the fall semester. New students must have consent of the instructor to participate.

@ Students who take both semesters of this course can use this toward a required science credit.

High School Choir    James Clifford

Lab fee: $13 (per 2 students)

The choir will be working on 2, 3 and 4-part sacred and classical music and will be developing their skills in proper vocal technique, sight-reading and part singing.  Students need to be able to match pitches and sing a melody line to be a part of the choir. Participation in the dress rehearsal on Tuesday, March 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. and the concert on Friday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m. is mandatory in order to receive a grade for the course. Families that are sharing music must have one copy per 2 students. If you have any questions about choir or the requirements, please contact James.
