Course Descriptions and Information
Textbooks: CHESS works hard to find good prices on all
of its textbooks. The textbook fees include all shipping
and tax costs. Unless specified, textbooks will be used for
both the fall and spring semesters. If you already own a
certain textbook please contact the CHESS office to verify
you have the correct edition.
Lab fees: Lab fees are determined by the number of
copies and kinds of supplies the teacher will need for their
course. We buy in bulk and try to keep these costs as low
as possible.

Instrumental Ensemble (.25 credit)

This group is open to all students who have played their instruments long enough to be able to read music at an intermediate/advanced beginner stage (generally 1-2 years of instruction). We will be playing folk music this semester and will perform in conjunction with the beginning and intermediate choirs. Students are required to participate in the spring semester performance on Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. to receive full credit. If you are in doubt about your skills, auditions are available.

Researching a topic doesn’t need to be laborious or boring. Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing as a base, students will learn about finding information, organizing it, and assembling compositions while learning structure and style. Although this class builds upon last semester, new students are always welcome. Writing can be fun, just come and see!

High School Choir (Ages 13+) (.25 credit)

Lab: $14 (music fee)
Students will be working on 3 and 4 part music and will receive instruction in vocal technique, choral blend, and sight-reading. We will be working on a variety of music this semester that is designed to expand the choir’s abilities. Students are required to participate in the dress rehearsal on Tuesday, March 27 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and the concert on Friday, March 30 at 7 p.m. to receive a grade for the course. Students who miss more than 3 rehearsals will not be able to sing in the concert (choir camp counts as 1 rehearsal). The choir camp on January 20 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. is included in the tuition for this course.
NOTE: Students need to be able to match pitches and confidently sing a melody line to participate in high school choir.

Secrets of Mental Math (.25 credit)

This fun and engaging math class is based around The Great Courses The Secrets of Mental Math DVD course and will include lectures such as Math in Your Head, Mental Addition & Subtraction, and Go Forth and Multiply. The goal of this course is to act as a fun refresher in basic math for parents and high school students. Parents are invited to take the course at half price ($25).

Utilizing the books Today Matters by John Maxwell and The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John Maxwell, we will look at building on and applying the leadership learned in part one. This class will focus more on the practical side of leadership. There will be a huge emphasis on character development as we challenge each student to “lay aside every weight.” (Heb 12:1) This class is an honors level class and is designed for the serious student that wants to make a kingdom difference in whatever arena of life God puts them in whether home, ministry, or business.

This group is open to string and woodwind players who have intermediate to advanced skills (generally 3 or more years of instruction). We will be playing the first movement of Mozart piano concerto no. 11 in F major with a piano soloist and additional standard chamber repertoire. Students will be required to attend a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, March 27 from 11:30-12:30 and the performance on Friday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. to receive credit.

In this class we will be looking at the inspiration and authority of God's Word. We will be using the second installment of the True U series put out by Focus on the Family entitled Is the Bible Reliable? We also will be looking at several sources to build on our reasons for faith.
